Reanna is from Whitehorse, Yukon and has worked intermittently for the Yukon Government and Porcupine Caribou Management Board as a wildlife technician since 2021. She received her B.Sc. from the University of Northern British Columbia, majoring in Wildlife and Fisheries. Reanna is keen to continue giving back to the community she grew up in, and hopes her masters project can contribute towards furthering knowledge, conservation and management initiatives on the North Slope.
The North Slope region of the Yukon, Alaska and NWT defines the summer range of the Porcupine Caribou Herd and is currently undergoing significant change including shrubification, increased moose abundance, and altered predation opportunities for wolves. These changes will likely impact sustenance opportunity for the Gwich’in and Inuvialuit people inhabiting this region. Reanna is studying wolf pack size, diet, behavioral shifts, and denning success between territorial and non-resident wolves and comparing her findings with historical data to assess changes in predator-prey dynamics. The goal of this project is to address several questions raised by co-management organizations and northern indigenous communities responsible for stewarding the land and enhancing local livelihood surrounding the Porcupine Caribou Herd.
